Cyrus the Great (600–530 B.C.), founder of the Persian Empire, is remembered for his enlightened rule, marked by tolerance, religious freedom, and respect for cultural diversity. He allowed displaced peoples, including the Jews exiled in Babylon, to return home and honored local traditions. His leadership brought peace and prosperity to the Middle East and Central Asia, earning praise from ancient historians. Humble in death, he chose a simple burial, rejecting riches. As he once said: “…it was through my own efforts that I reordered the world… and conquered far more by the force of my mental powers than by the strength of my sinews” (Larry Hedrick, 2006). Cyrus’s legacy continues to inspire those working toward knowledge, peace, and regional progress.
